About Under the Fig Tree
Καλώς ήρθατε! Welcome!
Since I was a young girl, I avidly listened to the stories my mother told me about her
family. They were far more interesting than any fairy tale – full of great loves and tragedies,
magic, mystery, heroes and cads. When I could, I questioned other family members for their stories
as well. Sadly, the ones who had known the most had long since gone. It is my belief that people have children in order that they can live on. Thus, I find it
sad that so many people know virtually nothing about even their grandparents in today’s world.
Did they like vanilla ice cream or wish they could play the violin? What was it that made them
special? Did we inherit any of their characteristics? I have set up this site so that those of us who share a Greek heritage can preserve and share
our stories, pictures, etc with each other. Much of what I know is word of mouth and may be
incorrect. Additionally, I have many unanswered questions and missing “links” to our story.
Please feel free to contribute what you can. Nothing is too insignificant. We all have different
puzzle pieces to contribute to the picture. By posting some of our earlier family names publicly
online, I hope to connect eventually with other long-lost cousins as well. The internet is slowly
bringing the world together. It is not my intention to endanger or embarrass any family member on this site. Information
about family members listed as “Living”, whether they are or not, will not be visible to anyone
except another invited family member. Also, I will not personally post any detailed information
about other living members of the family. You may choose to share that yourself. I will also not
post some unflattering stories about our ancestors. I will be happy to share any additional
information that I have privately to family members. I begin our odyssey in the beautiful, once-thriving village of Kontovazaina, high in the
mountains of Gortynia. I know that our journey will travel far from there, however, and I am
eager for the journey. Well met, fellow travelers. Well met!
“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the
lives of others.” ~ Pericles (paraphrased)

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
